Chainmaille Jewelry

By John William

Chainmaille Jewelry

Chainmaille is a form of making armor which uses a series of interlocking rings consisting of metal wire. This ancient technique of making amour is now used to make Jewelry. In jewelry this wire can either be gold or silver. Chainmaille is also known as chain mail, and chainmail, as well as many other combinations. However the most fitting name for this art of jewelry making is probably ‘maille’. There are various patterns or chainmaille weaves, out of which the 4-in-1 weave is the most popular. 4-in-1 means that every ring is connected by the 4 other rings. There are many variants to this weave for instance the 6-in-1 and also the 8-in-1 etc. These weaves are categorized as ‘European’ weaves. These are the most commonly known as and easiest to create, the mailles seen in the movie Lords of the Rings are all European weaves
.
Two distances are used to measure chainmaille i.e.: ID or Internal diameter, this is used to measure across the hole that is in the center of the ring used. The other most important measurement is the gauge of the wire used, which is also referred to as the thickness. These measurements define the look and the weight of the chainmaille that is made. You can experiment with various gauges and ID’s to make different patters that will vary in density.

Chainmaille jewelry can be fun and easy to make, it also gives you an opportunity to design and wear Jewelry that you want. You are no longer limited to the jewelry designs that are available to you, making chainmaille jewelry takes you one step ahead of others. Making your own chainmaille jewelry will put you in the driving seat of your creativity. The popularity of this ancient art of chainmaille jewelry making has skyrocketed in the past few years, with more and more do-it-yourselfers learning, designing and making their own jewelry.

Byzantine is one of the most popular of all types of chainmaille weaves. Byzantine bracelets woven from Bronze and sterling silver look as well as feel great. They are also fairly easy to make at home. You can make your own Chainmaille Bracelets with a little practice and knowledge.
