Search engine marketing or SEM for short is all about using or channelling the search engines edge for your own marketing purposes. It is one of the new ways in advertising, mainly aiming for internet users around the world.
How does it really work? When someone wants to search for something they type a keyword in search engines, hundreds, thousands and some millions of results would come up, some are paid advertisements others are free listings. They are arranged based on rankings that they have received from these search engines. So imagine one who is searching in a hurry, usually what they tend to do is to click on the first few sites that are on the top ranks. In free listings it is best to be on those top ranks, imagine how many people that you can reach if you are on those top spots.
Now the top two field in search engine marketing is your ticket to those top ranks, these are search engine optimization or seo and pay-per-click advertising or PPC.
SEO involves trying to achieve a high rank status for your own website by using the keywords or phrases that you are targeting at. The better your keywords are and the lesser the competition in it would result in a high search engine ranking page or SERPs for you.
Search engines uses a complex formulas to be able to rank web pages. Since we do not know how search engine do these ranking thing and if they are constantly changing the way they do it, our part is to use different types of ways called search engine optimizing. To be proficient in these ways you have to be really focused in solving the puzzled world of search engines. Being SEO specialist is not a job for everyone, it take time and practice and the right knowledge to be able to solve puzzles. To be one is a great edge for you, you can go on a training program to achieve this status. All you need to know will be shared with you and all you need to do is perfect it.
Pay-per-click advertising on the other hand is a matter of bidding for keywords or keyphrases to be able to achieve a higher listing. This is not a very simple, since it is not calculated as the ranking of your bids are. In here they use a percentage formula of the amount of clicks you get by the amount of views. It is quite technical really but to simplify it you need high bid and high click rate to have high listings.
Buying paid listings is one of the great way to test a product and the service it offers. This is the reason why many people suggest that you master PPC before optimizing your search engine free listings. It may be costly but it may be worth it. Just try to balance everything so that you will surely get a good investment return.
Search marketing can be well worth pursuing that is if you are serious enough in building a successful web-based business. Given the hard work involved in it, expect that you would need great amount of time to learn the ropes of it and applying it. Once you have done your part good results will come pouring in for good sales and profits for you.
