In 2000 AkshayaPatra, a charitable organization began feeding school children; it started as a pilot program in Bangalore, feeding 1,500 children in five schools. From this humble beginning, they have grown to providing food for 945,479 children in over 5000 schools. Their food for education mission is truly a noble one that many children are grateful for.
School children who are not properly nourished find it hard to concentrate in school or even find school important. In addition, there were not any other charitable organizations in a position to help. AkshayaPatra's food for education program seeks to alleviate their desperation and prepare them to be great leaders of the next generation. AkshayaPatra also encourages pregnant and lactating women to partake of the school lunch program. The hope is that they will alleviate malnutrition in newborns as well.

AkshayaPatra did not stop there; they also implemented plans to provide children with vitamin supplements and de-worming. On the advice of India's president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Vidya AkshayaPatra was realized.
Knowing that the future of their country depends on not only feeding the body but also training up the next generation this is a charitable organization that puts the hands to the plow to achieve their goals.

This is because of their ability to 100,000 meals in six hours as well as feeding a child for a mere $1200 dollars. The AkshayaPatra charitable organization was also awarded the International Fellow by the US Congressional Hunger Center.
