The Overwhelming New Corvette By Richard Shrayck
Chevrolet delivers more-than-expected value in every vehicle category. The ZR1 was the most expensive GM car ever made, but compared to other supercars of the time, it was comparatively cheap. Chevrolet offers seven E85-capable models in 2008. On top of that youll have to cash out a $1,700 gas guzzler tax, and if you so wish to opt for some special options get ready to spend another $12,000.
Expect to reach 60mph in the sub-4 second range. The ZR1 is based on the Corvette Z06's aluminum chassis, but there are quite a few unique body panels. Sub 4 second sprints to 60 mph and a genuine 200-mph top speed. GM is offering you the chance to be a Hydrogen Fuel Cell guinea pig.
5 pounds of boost is partially to thank for those ridiculous power levels. Additional drivetrain mods will be incorporated to hopefully keep it intact. The 260 mm (10 in) ZF-Sachs twin-plate clutch supplants Z06's 290 mm (11 in) single-plate unit to reduce inertia for better shift feel. Sales for the ZR1 are projected to begin in late 2008.
The softened shocks on launch aid the ZR1 by allowing the center of gravity to shift. GM says the ZR1 will be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 miles per hour. Coil packs are identical to those used on the LS3.
GM announced the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 price a couple of days ago. The front calipers are Brembo 6 piston. Chevrolet has been working on a high-end Corvette to slot above the Z06 as GM's hottest sports car for some time. The ZR1 does as this without compromising drivability.
Brakes discs are huge carbon-ceramic units that are clamped on by six-piston Brembo calipers in front and four-piston units in the rear. For that price, it no longer a "value hp" car, its a luxury sports car and the interior should match. The ZR1 actually has softer springs than the Z06 but uses the same magneto-rheological dampers as the Ferrari 599.
GM folks say they're getting closer to a production car, but, they say, the battery technology still needs to get better before these cars hit dealerships. 2L V-8 dubbed LS9, the ZR1 will produce at least 620 hp, with at least 595 lb-ft of torque. The ZR1 is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. With the largest dealer network in the United States, Chevy is the leader in full-size trucks and the leader in sales of vehicles priced $35,000 and above.
Carbon-ceramic drilled disc brakes dissipate heat like a blown radiator. For the price though, I doubt that will matter much. GM says this is the first consensus for the 2009 ZR1. 0 seconds -- Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11 seconds.
The name of the ride control system is Magnetic Selective Ride Control (MSRC). The average emissions from a Civic are more likely to greater than those of a ZR1 driver due to levels of use. The ZR1 engine is a modified LS3 designated the LS9.
