What to Expect in an English Listening Test

Taking an English listening test is a required part of any course in English, whether you attend an actual class or take an online course. A listening test in English is comprised of a passage read by a native English speaker. The purpose of the test is to see how well you understand what you hear. You listen to the passage and then answer one of more questions about the passage, such as the main idea or comprehension questions about different aspects of the topic discussed in the passage. Such a listening test is one of the components of the TOEIC or TOEFL exams.
When you take an online course in English you have many resources available to you to help you prepare for such a test. Each lesson begins with an audio presentation for the lesson focusing on the structure that you will learn. In beginning lessons, the passages will be short conversations using the structures and vocabulary of the lesson. If you browse the lesson before you actually start your class, then you will be able to spot these in the passage. You will also be able to read along with the passage as you listen to the native English speaker, which is a great help for English language learners. As you get used to the lesson, start listening to the passages without reading the text to gain the experience you will need for the test.
As you listen to each passage and then answer the questions in an online course, you get immediate results. As soon as you finish, you click the Grade Me icon to see how well you answered the questions about the passage. If you have any incorrect answers, you can replay the audio, read the script and then answer the questions again. While you are taking the course, it is beneficial to review the listening passages to ensure you maintain your learning throughout the course.
As with the grammar lessons the listening exercises proceed from easy to more difficult and longer passages. These require more concentration, but the best thing is that you can replay them as often as you like. The passages in an online course deal with many aspects of life that you will need when you travel or move to an English speaking country and help to immerse you in the language as you learn.
In addition to the passages that are part of the audio course and the lessons, you can also avail of a listening center on the site. In this center there are many modules in which you may have to discern the answers to the questions from the connotation of the words. This is an important facet of listening as well because some of the expressions and stresses on the words present different feelings and emotions of the speakers. You will also increase your English writing ability because some of the modules will require you to develop sentences and conversations of your own based on what you have heard.
