Preparation is Key to Reducing Bike Accidents in Bakersfield

Although Bakersfield is one of the most beautiful cities for cycling in California, there has been a number of safety concerns raised as there were 56 bike accidents in 2006, including four tragic fatalities. By preparing yourself for safety before you ride, you'll be able to avoid bike accidents and enjoy splendid views of the Kern River and the stunning Tehachapi Mountain Range.

Here are five ways to prepare yourself and your bike for riding in Bakersfield:

1. Drink Plenty of Water: In order to be ready for your ride, you should be properly hydrated. Without enough water, your mind may not act as quickly and your body might be too worn out to maneuver in time to avoid a bike accident. You should always have a water bottle with you if you're riding a long distance.

2. Adjust Your Bike: Your bike needs to be set up correctly for you to ride safely. If both your feet can touch the ground while you're sitting, then your seat is too low. By adjusting your seat, you'll not only make it easier for your legs to peddle, but you'll also have more control of your bike which will lessen your chances of a collision.

3. Check Air, Brakes, and Crankset: BikeBakersfield.org recommends you check your air, brakes, and crankset before each ride. By keeping your tires properly inflated, your brakes free from major wear and crankset tight, you'll ensure your bike is safe to ride in Bakersfield. Sadly, many cyclists get in bike accidents because they fail to maintain proper maintenance.

4. Know the Rules: Before you ever ride in Bakersfield, you must know the rules of the road. Hundreds of bike accidents happen in California each year because a cyclist isn't following the law.

5. Be Ready for the Conditions: You should always check the weather to make sure it is safe for you to ride. If you are an inexperienced cyclist, you might not want to ride a long distance in the rain. If it's dark outside, you need to put on all your reflective gear as well as your front and back lights. By preparing for the conditions outside you'll decrease your chance of being involved in a bike accident.

Next time you go cycling in Bakersfield, California, make sure you prepare for your ride beforehand so you can maximize your safety. With the city's population growing each year, safe biking habits are more necessary now than ever before. By making safety a part of your cycling routine and encouraging others to do so as well, you'll help make Bakersfield a better city to ride in with less bike accidents each year.
