Babysitters - Is Learning First Aid a Necessity

For parents who have children, it is not a surprise if you have been searching for a long time for that babysitter whom you can trust enough to leave your most precious possessions with. It will not be an easy task to build up your confidence for anyone but you do not have a choice. So what do you look for in a babysitter? Are there any more important questions to query besides the fee you are required to pay, her available working hours and days when she is free to take on extra duties?

Definitely there are! Some more critical questions to ask would be whether she is able to clear your baby's airway should she start to choke, does she have sufficient training in CPR should your baby stop breathing and if she is able to perform the Heimlich Maneuver? Such questions are more crucial than if you are able to save a dollar or two by employing her.

Babysitters are encouraged to go for first aid training courses which are easily available. One organization that carries out the first aid course is the American Red Cross. They will conduct training at home should any parents or babysitters require their assistance. Training conducted are by both profit as well as non profit organizations.

There are also available in the market first aid training courses for teens who wish to earn some money by being a babysitter. Such courses will enhance the teens' reputation of being a good babysitter. Besides the basic first aid tips, lessons also include skills on effective playtime with the children, and how to best handle situations when they are out feeding or diapering and the correct responses to emergencies that involve water. These courses are normally available for babysitters who are aged between 11 and 15.

The babysitter will be awarded with a babysitter completion card once she passes the course. Besides someone who loves kids is not enough pre-requisite to be a good babysitter, she also needs to be someone who is capable of making the best choices in the event of emergencies. To get a babysitter who is trained in first aid is a sense of security for the parents although she is only able to pursue the rescue aid until medical help arrives. On the other hand, parents must remember that a babysitter who shows a first aid training completion certificate does not in any way indicate that the babysitter is capability of administering CPR as those requires separate certifications.

Based on observations, a parent would usually prefer the babysitter who knows what syrup of ipecac and what it is used for. It is also a necessity for the babysitter to know which trinkets are too small for a child to put into his mouth and in case one is put in, what should be done immediately. It may seem to be common sense for many adults for these teen babysitters, they are actually traits that need to be learned. In addition, one can safely conclude that a girl is more serious about her babysitting job if she has gone through the steps to become certified. All these are considered in the assumption that she has your child's best interest in mind.

As such, it is definitely essential that anyone who is keen in child care and beyond to have training in First Aid. In order to ensure that your children are in safe hands, make sure that the person you leave in charge of your children has the qualifications to take good care of them in any circumstance. In view of the fact that nowadays it is essential for both parents to work, the demand for babysitters is on the increase so it should be made compulsory for all babysitters to have a certification in First Aid Training.
