What Everyone Should Know Before Buying A TFT Display By Robert Bell
When you buy a new computer, you have two choices for the monitor, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) or TFT (thin film transistor liquid crystal display). In choosing a computer display, you need to ask your self some serious questions.
1.Do you have enough space in the area you intend to work? This some times rules our CRT monitors as they are extremely deep, it’s like working with a TV on your desk! On the back of most TFT displays there is a VESA plate, this is a plate with pre drilled holes, so that you can mount the monitor on a wall if required, saving even more valuable work space.
2.Is your decision based on costs?
If so, you need to consider the fact that you can purchase CRT displays very cheaply, however they are not a green product and out dated, with the advancement of technology the price for TFT monitors is dropping almost daily and there are some excellent deals out there.
3.Do you demand higher graphic quality?
If you do, this will point you towards the TFT, due to the fact that each pixel has a transistor that refreshes each page several times a second, quicker than the a blink of an eye. A typical TFT display contains 1.29 million pixels, with over 249 shades of red, blue and green.
4.Mounting options - CRT display desk only, TFT display can be mounted on walls, desks etc?
A TFT monitor can be mounted almost anywhere by means of the VESA plate that’s on the rear of the monitor. This plate has bolt holes that have centres 75mm x 75mm or 100 mm x 100 mm depending upon the size of the display. The holes are drilled and tapped to accept an M4 bolts, thus securing the monitor to the plate.
5.Do you need a Eco-Friendly monitor?
If so, the TFT is the most green monitor available on the market at this current time. The CRT is old technology and isnt as green as a TFT unit, due to CRT monitors giving out far more heat and radiation and a TFT display will reduce power consumption by 25-50%.
Now you have to make your own decision which monitor to go for, if you decide on the TFT display, you now have to narrow down the size of screen, 17 inch and 19 inch displays are the most widely available.
