India Is Being Tormented By Monsoon Flooding

It does not seem to matter where we look around the world these days we can somewhere that is having flooding. While some areas of the world are suffering from extreme droughts, the reverse is true for others. The monsoon season lasts from June until September and people who live in their normal paths are used to some flooding, but this time is on a more catastrophic level. They always needs the rains at this time of year to ensure good crops, but when Mother Nature over does it, it can mean destruction and devastation instead.

The area of the north Indian state of Bihar has been the most recent recipient of excessive flooding. Last week the Kosi River over extended her banks and brought the flooding. Over one million people have been affected by this up until now. Rescue efforts are still going on and the Bihar state has asked for help from relief agencies in order to be able to help those who are in need of food and shelter. These people in need have been severed from the rest of the country because their roads and railways are under water leaving them with no real way to get out.

One thing that is being dealt with as a result of the Kosi River flooding is that it seemed to be flooding in areas that were not normally affected at this time of the year. This is devastating because the people who live in the areas that were flooded unexpectedly were not prepared in any way. Not that you can really be prepared well for a flood at ant time, but sometimes when resident realize that they can easily be flooded, they might at least have a plan of action to take in place when floods do come.

In America, the Gulf Coast is still recovering from the ravishment of Hurricane Katrina, which was one of the worst flooding disasters that we have seen. The Midwestern United States also suffered flooding this past spring that was not expected either. The pictures of the flooded regions of India are eerily similar to the pictures we viewed of Louisiana and the Midwest after our floods. It is so hard to imagine being stranded with your family in a situation like this unless you have actually experienced it.

Floods have always been a part of the world just as other kinds of natural disasters have been. We humans seem to be resilient enough to overcome them and move on in the end despite the huge amount of suffering and loss that we go through. Hopefully those in India will be able to do the same.
