Helicopters for Sale: Tips for Making a Great Buy

Before you decide to become a chopper shopper, you may need to decide one question: why in the world would anybody want to buy a helicopter?  Some of the most common reasons include sport and recreation (such as the ability to travel to and from a remote area) and professional use (like military or “search and rescue” operations).  Whether you’re a police chief interested in expanding the force’s arsenal or a business man who needs to do a lot of on-the-fly traveling, you may have decided that a helicopter is right for you.  So what’s next, you ask?  Assuming you’re a newcomer, let’s look at the basic.  There are a surprising number of websites that are manufacturers helicopters of all kinds.  There are three main types of choppers: the single-rotor, coaxial-rotor, and the tandem-rotor.  The single-rotor is the most frequent.  Cost will vary based on model, age, and size.  You can buy them small enough to fit only two people or big enough to fit multiple vehicles inside.  Rest assured, they don’t come cheap.  New copters will run you anywhere from $200,000 to $400,000.  A used one may cost you considerably less (in the tens of thousands instead of the hundreds).  There is also the option of leasing from a company instead of buying one outright.  Popular models include the Blackhawk, the Scorpion, the Robinson, and the Cessna.  Don’t forget to purchase additional supplies such as a parachute, manual compass, first aid kit, and other logical aviation-related supply before going up in the air.  One final tip: don’t expect to learn to fly in one day.  A helicopter is a very complicated machine and it requires weeks or usually months of training to be able to handle one competently.  Unlike driving or other transportation on the ground, a pilot must think in three dimensions.  While you’re not likely to fly into a lot of traffic, falling from the sky at 20,000 feet is much more likely to be fatal than crashing in a vehicle already on the ground.  Call on the services of a respectable flight school who has plenty of experience and pay close attention to all the safety precautions.  After all, anything worth doing is worth doing right!
