More Families Traveling Less Due to Economy

By Roger Munns

More Families Traveling Less Due to Economy

Because of the recent sluggishness in the world's economies, many people are avoiding holiday trips. For example, a recent survey showed that one in three British citizens are avoiding foreign travel as a way to save money. Also, many travelers are avoiding travel insurance, and at least two-thirds of vacationers are hoping to use their savings to fund trips instead of using credit.

Cost cutting is taking other forms, as well. Many are opting for do-it-yourself home repairs in order to save on labor costs. More and more British citizens are spending time at home as a bulwark against unstable financial forces. North Scotland is experiencing the largest impact as 89 percent of households are altering their routines in order to save money.

Unfortunately, this change in holiday travelers' habits will have an effect on many of the top tourism destinations. While the wealthy class will keep traveling and spending, the average citizen won't be able to go abroad for vacations. Elite vacation spots will retain their status but less glamorous destinations will feel the impact of less tourism revenue.

In particular, Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands, will likely experience a significant drop in its tourism industry. While Gran Canaria has its share of wealthy travelers, most of the visitors to the island come from a more modest background. Affordable food and accommodations made it enticing for the average British family to travel to the island in years past. This year, saving money by staying home is a more attractive option for many Britons.

Gran Canaria is often called a 'mini-continent' because of its diverse climatology. The climate varies so much from area to area that the island seems much larger than it actually is. Many holiday goers love this unique property of Gran Canaria. There are 32 natural protected spaces on the island. In such places, nature takes a front seat to mankind's encroachment.

One of the most popular natural destinations of Gran Canaria is a wild bird refuge called Palmitos Park. The aviary and botanical garden give visitors a great view of the natural landscape of Gran Canaria. Situated in the countryside within the mountains, Palmitos Park also contains an amphitheater where shows featuring wild birds of prey are performed for the public. This amphitheater is incorporated into the natural surroundings so as not to disturb the feel of the park.

Playa de Ingles is another popular destination for tourists. Build around the Yumbo Centrum shopping center, this area contains a great set of dance clubs for those seeking some nightlife. Playa de Ingles also has a fabulous beach, lagoon and lighthouse that are ideal for sightseers and beachgoers.

With travel expenses increasing exponentially, many people from all over the world will avoid lavish travel and distant holiday destinations like Gran Canaria. The economic downturn is likely temporary, but it will negatively impact the tourism industry of Gran Canaria in coming months. Hopefully, in a short time, economic woes will ease and the average vacationer will be able to relax on a beach in the Canary Islands once again.
