Best Haunted Spots in Charleston

Poogan’s Porch
Having its walls frequently graced by out-of-towners and celebrities, Poogan’s Porch lives up to all they hype surrounding it. One of Charleston’s best known restaurants, it provides much more than a superb dining experience. Known to many as one of the most haunted places in America, Poogan’s is also home to a ghost named Zoe St. Amand. Previously her home, Zoe passed away there in 1954. She’s been seen a number of times wearing the same old black dress she did when she was alive. She also is a frequent visitor to the kitchen staff. Many non-believers of ghosts change their minds once they begin working at Poogan’s. Kitchen supplies have disappeared; pots and pans have inexplicably fallen to the floor. The police have been called out many times to investigate the little old lady, waving out the upstairs window only to find it empty. Come ready for a “spookily” good time at Poogan’s Porch.

The Rutledge Victorian Guest House
If you want to turn the heat up a notch with your visit to Charleston, the Rutledge Victorian Guest House should be your next stop. Found in the old, historic, downtown residential area of Charleston, it holds a haunted tale at that. Standing 5 stories many years ago, a fire raged through the home and destroyed the top floor. Sadly, Sarah was killed in the fire. Sarah is said to be an extremely friendly ghost and has her own suite named after her. People have witnessed her peering in from a window above the stairway and she is also known to play with the lights from time to time. If you are in the right place, you may catch a whiff of her smoky trail she carries with her as she walks through the house.

The Battery House Carriage Inn
Located across the street from Charleston’s White Point Gardens, the Battery House Carriage Inn has spirits looming all around it. Situated behind a magnificent mansion, it was used as the carriage house for several years. The ghosts have even been captured on film. No one seems to know who they are though and why they are there. Known for its pirate hangings and fortifications, many believe the White Point Gardens may hold the secret. Several of the Inn’s guests have experienced these ghosts firsthand. There are stories of one man encountering a rather angry ghost who growled ferociously at him. Other stories involve a “gentleman” ghost who prefers the ladies. He is known to lie next to them and put his arms around them. Only when they scream does he leave. Come and see a piece of history, literally, at the Battery House Carriage Inn.
