Five Occasions For A Group Gift By stefan pongratz
Buying group gifts is getting more and more common these days. People do it for weddings and graduation parties and soon we will probably see group gifts for Christmas as well. While personal gifts can be more special and romantic, there are occasions when a group gift actually is a better choice.
Weddings are perfect occasions for group gifts. The couple just got married and they probably don't want to get silver spoons or salad bowls. More than likely they could use some cash for the down payment of their new home or they could use some nice furniture for their new home. A group gift is ideal for weddings as it allows people to contribute together towards these more expensive gifts and get the couple something they can really use.
Are group gifts acceptable for graduation parties? This is another ideal occasion for group gifts. Studies show that people spend on average $50 per graduation gift. Imagine if ten people decided to go and buy one nice gift instead of plenty of MP3 music cards or books? The opportunities open up when people leverage group contributions. Perhaps this could be enough money to buy a watch that they graduate will carry for the rest of his life. Or even better, maybe a trip to Europe. They worked hard and this is their opportunity to travel before they start their professional career.
Birthday parties is another excellent example where group gifts come in handy. For even special birthdays, gather a group and purchase something special for your friend. She does not want ten CDs. She wants a new flat screen or a new golf set.
Your parent's anniversary is ideal for getting everbody together to chip in for a special gift. A friend of mine went in with her sisters and got her parents a trip to France for her parent's 30th anniversary and they had the times of their lives. Not only were they happy to see that their children care for them so much but also they were happy that they could enjoy the trip. And all it took was a little bit of organizing. They did not spend any more money than they would have had they purchased individual gifts.
FInally, let's talk about house warming parties. You know the couple will most likely be broke after paying that huge down payment and most house warming parties I have been to have not been in fully furnished houses. In other words, it is fairly easy to find gifts for a couple who just bought their first home. A flat screen TV these days shared among a small group of people can be a relatively minor purchase. This will most likely be more appreciated than a vase or a set of knives.
Group gifts allow people to buy more expensive gifts for special occasions. Keep in mind that it has its time and place. Weddings, graduation parties, birthday parties, anniversaries, and house warming parties are excellent occasions for group gifts. If you are contributing towards a special gift, make sure your name is on the card or how will the person know that you contributed towards their wishlist?
