Something For Everyone In Bogota By Gaizka Pujana
It is always better to go somewhere that is less explored. However, you should not kid yourself if you think that Bogota is not a haven for tourists. Firstly, the city attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists. Secondly, Bogota has all the facilities and accommodation of any first class city. Bogota has a bit of everything. It has great cultural history, beautiful scenery and a night-life with the most amazingly rich South American flavour second to none. On the cultural side, Old Bogota has a great number of attractions. These include the Bogota Cathedral, the Plaza de Bolivar and the Religious Art Museum. There are many different museums and cultural sites to choose from. It all depends on your taste and how much time of your holiday you wish to dedicate to cultural visits. If your main aim is to see all these landmarks then you should look at getting accommodation in the older parts of Bogota. This is where most of the museums are situated and you will also revel in the old architecture.
If you are interested in architecture then one must-see is the Palacio de Narino that houses the president and is situated in La Candelaria. This palace is connected to the Senate of the Republic and to the Plaza de Bolivar. Although they do not allow photographs of the building for security and information gathering purposes, this is definitely something worth seeing. You may not find accommodation exactly like the presidential palace (unless you are willing to pay for it of course) but you will be able to find many top class hotels in Bogota that will suit your budget. If you prefer the freedom of a self-catering apartment then you should have no problem in finding one. Your best chance of finding the perfect accommodation is to book well in advance or to book out of peak season.
Bogota also has a great nightlife. If you want to spend your evenings reveling in the vibe then you should book your accommodation in the newer parts of Bogota. This is where you will find the best nightclubs, bars and trendiest restaurants. If you are within walking distance from the main hub of the centre then you will enjoy your stay much more, although the public transport and taxi service is top notch. If you are worried about your safety then you will be happy to know that the authorities have steadily improved the face of the city over the last two decades and Bogota is now a fairly safe city to tour at night.
Bogota really does have something to offer everyone and is the perfect balance between old and new. You just have to find the perfect holiday accommodation whether it's a hotel, self-catering apartment or holiday rental.
