Feng Shui and Your Window Shades

Feng Shui and Your Window Shades

Many decorators use the principle of "feng shui" to create a room that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also conducive to the health and happiness of the residents. Whether you believe in the concepts or not, feng shui can help you turn a room into an energetic and pleasing space.

The Importance of Placement
The fundamental concept behind feng shui is that energy flows through any space and that all objects affect that flow. If the space is too open, then energy passes through the room too quickly. If it is too constricted, the energy becomes stagnant.

Imagine energy flowing into the room from the door. Where will it flow and where will it get trapped?

A window that faces the entry allows the energy to escape too quickly. Slow the energy with honeycomb window blinds that insulate the window against heat and cold, and filter the light without blocking it.

Windows in restricted places like corners benefit from sheer window shades that let energy flow more smoothly by letting more light through.

Maintaining Balance
Balancing the yin and yang forces is another important feature of feng shui. Yin elements such as rounded edges, floral prints, and horizontal lines slow the energy flow. Yang elements like angular shapes, plain surfaces, and vertical lines speed the energy. By carefully balancing both elements in a room, the energy lingers a bit but does not stagnate.

Window shades are an excellent method of balancing these forces without sacrificing your chosen decor.

For example, rooms decorated in a contemporary style tend to be yang-heavy because of their rigid lines and light colors. Using horizontal window blinds provide a yin source that balances the room and regulates the flow of energy.

Light and Landscapes
A beautiful view and the influx of natural light are both important elements to the feng shui of the room. Absence of these can harm the energy flow.

Any window with a view of natural elements, particularly trees or water, or positioned to let in a lot of sunlight should use sheer window shades that will allow these elements to enhance the room's energy.

On the other hand a negative window, one that is dark or which looks out on something artificial, would be better served by blinds that are more restrictive so they block the bad energies coming in. Dark or insulated blinds will protect the room from outside forces.

Listen to Your Inner Voice
We are all inherently in tune with the forces of nature and can feel them whether we know it or not. As such, we are the best judge with how the energy flows in a room.

If a room feels wrong then it is wrong, even if you can't quite place what the problem is. Experiment with moving furniture or other elements of the room until the space feels comfortable. Use your instincts to create a calming and nourishing environment.
