The Difference Between Good And Bad Mold By Rachel Yoshida
Mold is usually associated with negative thoughts. We all know that a lot of molds can cause serious health problems, but did you know that it could also help us? They are grown in some cheeses, but some cheeses do not have mold in them. Mold is what gives it that distinctive taste.
For example, there are blue cheeses called Stilton, Gorgonzola, and Roquefort, which are made by using penicillium glaucum molds. They are aged and turned in to a color that looks so much like blue veins. It is also used in tofu, a Chinese tea called Puer, and Quorn, which is a European meat-alternative product suitable for vegetarians. These molds are good for you to eat, and the mold might look funny but it is harmless. These are just in foods, but there are many other things that have mold in it. Mold cannot only be found in cheese but it is in bread, and many other foods. There are many types of mold or fungi that thrive on vegetables and dead animals to reproduce and spread.
Mold is also in many medicines, and it fights off bacteria. Mold are used in the creation of antibiotics, which are used throughout the world in medicines. It is the best drug to kill bacteria. Penicillin, for example, is made through the use of green mold. Other molds are formed into organic acids and into lactic acids, which are used for crop productions and to make products, such as beer.
Did you know that if there was no mold, decomposition would not take place and dead decaying animals, which have carbon, would not even be reprocessed? Carbon will affect our world to the point where no living thing on earth can live here. We would all die off. See, mold is a part of our lives. It is the compounds that bond us together. Mold keeps the balance of life on earth in its cycle. Yes, some molds can hurt us, but we've just got to protect ourselves from them and stick to our natural lives.
The mold, although sometimes bad, helps us live out our lives. You may not see some of them, but they are there helping the earth and its environment. Also, mold can be found in colonies. These reproduce asexually, and other molds grow through sexual reproduction. Scientists know that these molds grow in just a few hours. It started that way in the beginning, and it will remain this way until the end of time.
