Room decor requires balance between form and function. Window blinds block light, save energy, and protect privacy. If that's all you needed you could nail boards over your windows. Instead you want window shades that are functional and reflect your personal style.
The problem is that many people have trouble defining their personal styles.
Draw Inspiration From Standard Styles
There are many standard decors out there such as Queen Anne, Contemporary, or American Country. Looking at showrooms in these styles can give you a feel for what you want such as a palette, decorative accents, or materials for your window treatments.

Other than children, each home has additional needs. In the frozen north or the scorching south, energy efficiency is going to be high on the list. Over time you will start making changes to the room to adapt it to better suit your personality. Instead make it that way from the start by looking at window treatments that have a more casual look.
