Treasures In The Water Amount To Billions In Cash And Gold By Rachel Yoshida
There has always been an appeal for many people who dream of looking for treasures in the water of the oceans. These dreamed of treasures are all too real and have been the pursuit of many. The majority of the sunken treasures that have been sought after and discovered by these avid searchers are found in ships that were sunk many, many years ago.
During the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, sear faring vessels were common and often would not make it to their desired destination because of terrible storms or when their ships became unstable. This is why many of their valuable cargoes ended up at the bottom of the sea somewhere.
Many of these ship wrecks and disappearances were recorded through out history. The El Dorado was one of thirty two caravels that sailed from Santa Domingo in 1502. They ran into hurricane winds and twenty seven or the caravels, among them the El Dorado were wither swamped by water and sank or were destroyed crashing against the rocks of Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, and the Mona islands.
The treasure consisted of gold, pearls, and a solid gold table that was to be a gift to the Catholic Kings from a man named Bobadilla as a reward for his appointment as Governor. Some of the ships treasures were reclaimed from those that were crashed against the coastline, but the El Dorado might never be.
In 1511 the Flor De LA Mar wrecked off the northern coast of Sumatra after the Admiral of the ship and his men raided the ancient kingdom of Malacca or present day Malaysia, when the sultan denied them permission to trade there. The amount of treasure that was looted from this kingdom consisted of diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, coins, and all sorts of artifacts. This treasure was estimated at between 1 and a half to 3 billion dollars today.
Just from these two examples alone it is entirely understandable why so many have the dream of finding and recovering sunken treasure from ships that went down so long ago. If a person only found one of the thousands of wrecks that are scattered all over the world, how rich could they become?
Even with the treasure aside, these fortune hunters are also in love with the thrill of the adventure that hunting down such booty entails. Some of these treasure hunters search off and on all their life for a find and never do, but they probably would not trade the time spent looking for anything else.
