ERP Systems By Matt Woodward
Managing all the resources for your business can be time consuming and hard work. Resources such as your company's stock, employees, customers and many more, all need careful management to ensure that your business operates smoothly. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is the name given to the planning of acquisition and management of your company's resources, and as with other fields where computers have had a profound effect, they can help here too.
ERP systems are basically comprised of computer software that is designed to manage resources. Quite often, an ERP system is made up of a number of separate modules that each deal with a specific resource or set of resources, and all of these modules will work together, operating from one large central database of company information. For example, a warehouse management system (WMS) will help to keep track of the movement of products or materials in your company's warehouse(s) and not only this, will often be able to automate much of the logistical issues involved with running a warehouse.
Since a lot of the resource management issues a company faces will be specific to that company alone, ERP systems are often built from the ground up to a set of requirements just for that company. This means that you will not be able to go to the local computer store and pick up ERP software from their shelves, but rather you will have to go to a software development company that can design and implement this kind of software for you. An ERP specialist company will have a good understanding of the kind of resource management problems you face on a daily basis, and will work closely with you to ensure the product they build for you does exactly what you need.
An ERP system is designed to be modular. This means that although all of the separate modules will operate from the same central store of information in a relational database, it is still able to evolve with time. If your company's needs change in future the software can be modified or expanded upon to provide altered functionality. This also means you could, for example, have a warehouse management system developed, and then later on when you have more capital to invest, you could have a financial package developed and integrated into the system. Later still, you may have a human resources module developed to help with recruitment, employee tracking and payroll or even a project management module. There really is no limit and the ERP system can be developed to the point where much of your business is in fact automated.
Having an ERP system developed for your company can mean much less expense in both money and time long-term on management and planning, and more time regained for actually planning the future of your business. Other advantages of ERP systems include the ease of managing your company's data and excellent capabilities for backing up that information, having less paperwork can also mean not only less space is taken up but also less errors and data loss occurring. Add all this to the fact that reports can be generated in an instant for assessing how your business is doing and you can clearly see that for medium to large sized businesses, a computer ERP system is the way to go.
