There are more than 300 species of the aloe plant. This African plant has succulent spiked leaves, which if broken, release aloe vera gel. The aloe plant is referred to in historic texts as being used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Asia for its beautifying and healing effects.

For this reason, until more studies are known, it is recommended that young children avoid taking aloe products internally. Internal use of aloe vera can contradict some drugs. People with allergies to plants of the lily family, such as tulips and garlic, should avoid this plant of the same family.

Aloe vera has found its way into personal, first aid and health food products. It is one of the most widely recognized natural products. Many people prefer aloe vera products to other similar products because of its many benefits.
