Miles Of Tiles For Interior Decoration By Catherine Harvey
Bathrooms have only been in existence as a specific room for the last eighty years or so. Before that, a bucket in an outdoor shed and a tin bath in the living room were used for the daily ablutions.
Today, however, the bathroom is an entity in itself. It has become a haven for people to unwind at the end of a long, hard day. Soaking in a hot bath, buried in bubbles, bathed in soft candlelight with whale music playing in the background to soothe, relax and massage the days stresses away is the goal of many a workers day. Ok, the whale music may be a stop too far but you get my drift.
Entire magazines are dedicated to the planning of a bathroom to get the ambience just right. Some people like simple functionality in their bathrooms, with clean lines and smooth surfaces. This will often consist of white baths, lots of chrome and bathroom tiles that are plain in colour, possibly with a gloss surface. This also tends to make a bathroom look ultra modern.
Some prefer a more traditional look to their bathroom. Victorian style slipper baths, ornate sanitary wear and ceramic bathroom tiles with ditsy print flowers are the basics. Add to this the extras of wicker baskets of fluffy towels and pots of pot pourri and candles and you have your traditional bathroom.
Family bathrooms are more about practicalities of bathroom furniture that is easy to negotiate and clean, given the amount of children and pets that are likely to pass through it. Style does not have to be compromised here however and whole sections of bathroom tile shops will have decoration that appeals to families.
Households that are willing to use paint or wallpaper as the choice of wallcovering in a bathroom are few and far between these days. There is so many choices of bathroom tiles these days that you can give a bathroom an entire makeover and totally new look by changing the tiles. Keeping furniture and fittings the same cuts down on the expense and gives you a little more to spend on the tiles that will bring a whole new life to the room.
Gloss bathroom tiles with a matt pattern on can bring a wonderfully modern look to a bathroom. They resemble wall paper quite well but without the hassle of looking after it. A simple wipe down and buff is often all it takes to look after a tiled wall and this keeps a bathroom looking fresh and clean for years.
Natural materials, or bathroom tiles that resemble natural materials, such as stone, slate or marble are very popular. There is something innately right about picking natural looking materials to get you back to the basics of life when you want to truly relax. When it comes to picking the tiles for the wall or floor, you would do well to think about how much light you have in the room. If there is limited natural light, then gloss tiles are a good idea as they will reflect plenty of light back into the room. However, these are not the best idea if you have a young family as water splashes are common and show up. If your bathroom has plenty of natural light you can afford to be more free with your choice of tiles.
When decorating your bathroom, the tiles are the point where you get to show expression and style and taste. You can mix and match colours, sizes, borders and even add in complete panels for interest. You can be as bold or as subtle as you like. Even an entirely white bathroom can be dramatic. White fittings, white furniture, white tiles and white towels - if you don't mind cleaning can have a serene, peaceful look. Just remember to account for lighting to soften the edges of this effect.
