Miscommunication Mess up the Background Check

When one teacher of Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools was caught shooting heroin on school property, it was then that a plan for checking current employees became a must.

Later on, they even found out that the teacher had a history of drug abuse. Most teachers, parents and students encountered no problem with that since this will protect each student as well as the teachers.

The commotion started with the memo. The information stated that unless they authorize the district to investigate their finances, background, character and mode of living, that could serve as a ground for termination. They only had 2 days to sign the memo.

The workers were aware of the background check but worse came to worst of the information. They are shocked because they didn’t know that the memo will turn out that way. The policy didn’t give justice of the relay details. They felt manipulated and threatened by the memo. How is it that a simple policy will have a hard tone like that?

Frank Gorman, School Superintendent of Schools, soon answered and felt sorry for what happened. He bridged the communication gap by apologizing to the concerned workers and clarified that there would be more discussions about the revised policy.

For whatever proposed project or plan, be sure that you have a clear reason behind it.

Miscommunication can wreck the relationship and might as well create a serious problem.

The problem in this case is that the harm has already been done. There is nothing left to do or say but to humbly acknowledge the mistake committed. You should emphasize and give the idea that a background check is so important for safety reasons. Yet the way or the means is not suitable for the concerned because it sounds demanding and threatening.

Be sure that you don’t offend anybody when you need to conduct a background check. Make it clear that you mean no harm to them when you conduct a background check but to protect them as well.
