Quality Cowboy Boots: Essential Western Apparel

When you set out to buy a pair of cowboy boots, whether it is your very first pair or a replacement for the pair you've been wearing for the past twenty years, and have worn cowboy boots for all your life, it is very important that you look for quality workmanship. Western wear enthusiasts know all too well how much is being put on the shelves that is made to look like cowboy boots, but in terms of practicality and durability, would hardly even qualify. If you have the money, a good pair of custom boots is the absolute ideal- built just for you, they will fit your feet like no store-bought pair ever could. Good craftsmanship should remain a large part of western apparel, after all, isn't that part of the appeal?

The following are examples of what you should look for in a pair of cowboy boots:

* High quality materials. The leather should be smooth, with no pockmarks or scratches, and consistent coloring. The heels should have stacked leather, not fake laminate, and the counter (the stiff area behind the heal) should also be made of hard leather.
* The shank of the boot should be steel through the arch and held in place with wooden pegs.
* Look a the seems of the boots. You want very even stitching with the seams lined up as closely as is possible. The seams on the inside of the boot should be very smooth as well, otherwise they can irritate your legs.
* The boots should look very clean- no dried glue or loose strings anywhere.
* The outside edges and the inlay should be smooth and firmly glued in place.
* The edges of the soles and heels should have a smooth finish around the edges. This is known as "dressing the heel."
* The boots should look the same, in both toe shape and heel height.
* The boots should be free-standing, meaning that they can stand on their own without any support.
* The toe should be well-formed to either a rounded or a pointed end with no lumps in it.

Over all, the boots should look very polished with clean lines. The actual construction of the boot is the most important thing you should be looking at. Once you have ascertained that the boot was well made with quality materials, then you can look into the more aesthetic designs. Different bootmakers have different signature marks, and many offer a variety of decorative options, whether you'd like fancy floral stitching or colored leather inlays in the boot. Once you have a good pair of boots, be sure to break them in gently. Next, prepare to enjoy them for a long time to come.
