SEO, or Search Engine Optimization is the way by which people manipulate the text on their websites with the intent to raise their site in the search engines.
Typically a web writer or site owner will look for the most commonly searched for phrases in their niche and then create copy that is tailor written with those keywords and key phrases in mind. Search Engine Optimization is a great way to get new visitors to take a chance and visit your site based, simply, on where it places among the search engine's individual search results.
If you want to generate traffic from SEO, here are a few tips to help you out:
1. Target the content of your website to a specific niche. This will help you attract people who are searching for specific information.
2. Let each article or blog post on your site be tailor written to specific areas of your niche. For example, if you have a website devoted to selling fishing equipment, you might have articles about "how to choose a fishing reel" or "the best fishing lures to use" or even articles on how to catch specific fish.
3. Plan your SEO campaigns. There are plenty of tools on the internet that you can utilize to tell you which search strings are the most popular. Look for the most often searched for key phrases in your niche and hit those phrases hard with your content. The better your topic concentration, the higher your site will place in the search engine rankings.
4. Make sure your SEO-centric content is updated regularly. Search engines crawl the internet frequently to look for new content that they can highlight. If your content is old, your site will fall amongst the search engine rankings, which is the last thing you want.
5. Remember that, above all, your content needs to be readable. It is better to choose keywords and key phrases that are worded correctly than to choose something ill worded that is slightly more popular. For example, "best fishing lures" gives you better copy than "fishing lures best in market." If your copy isn't readable, your traffic won't convert to sales, so make sure that you are writing for your readers and not the search engines!
