Climbing Wall Construction – What to Expect By Eldorado Walls
Climbing wall construction can be a foreign concept to many potential owners, architects, and general contractors. Although processes vary by manufacturer there are standards to expect that can aid in planning.
To start with, most climbing wall builders will bring their own installation team. Their employees have the experience and training to put the wall up in less time than general laborers. Before ever arriving on site, the climbing wall design and engineering must be approved by the client. Climbing wall builders will usually choose to prefabricate parts of the wall in their manufacturing shops and ship the pieces to the work site where everything will be completed and constructed. Timelines on site will vary, but as a general rule of thumb, custom rock climbing walls take about a week per 1000 sq ft of wall, plus one week for set up and tear down.
Once on site, the climbing wall installation team will weld, erect the structure, hang shapes or panels and texture or paint the wall. In some instances the manufacturer will place climbing handholds on the wall and provide “routesetting.” Many times manufacturers will also provide all of the necessary equipment and autobelays needed to make the wall fully functional.
When the wall is complete, any reputable manufacturer will provide training on wall operations and maintenance.
