How To Communicate On The Same Wavelegth With People

By using the Meta Model, you can make use of language patterns to influence others, to think from multiple perspectives. You can also use this model to prevent yourself from being too fixed in certain un-useful patterns of judgments in your day to day life.

One of the concepts of the Meta Model is known as 'Chunking'. When you communicate with people at work, do you find that some of them dwell with details whereas some do not bother about details at all? The difference is in the way they chunk information.

Big picture people are high chunk people. They tend to see things in the abstract overview. They can visualize the future and see many possibilities.

Low chunk people tend to be the opposite. They need details and often thrive on them. Most of the time, CEOs of companies tend to have the ability to think at high chunks, whereas specialists, such as technicians and accountants, look at low chunks.

It has been known that the effective CEO is able to look at all levels and moves across all levels of thinking. Ineffective ones tend to only look down to a certain level.

Specialists, however, seldom have the ability to chunk upwards because they tend to be too specialized to the details. Sometimes, it is because of this mismatch that makes a CEO appear too bossy, and a specialist, too narrow-minded.

Often, miscommunication occurs when the CEO with a high chunk personality, starts talking about a vision for the company, or a grand plan, and then expects his subordinates to carry out this project, not realizing that his subordinates do not understand exactly what he is talking about.

The moment the plan is executed, the CEO gets shocked to realize that his subordinates were not paying attention, or at least that is what he thinks. Heads roll, and his subordinates scramble to get the project out in time.

Imagine the amount of miscommunication and frustration that will happen if the CEO and the specialist, professional, have a discussion.

If high chunk thinkers meet low chunk thinkers, they have to build in a lot of flexibility in order to build rapport. This basically means that we have to learn how to traverse different levels of thinking, high chunk or low chunk.

The person who is more of a high chunk thinker, must be able to go down into lower chunks, and likewise, those who are typically low chunk, must develop the ability to go into abstract overviews.

This way, both can match each others thinking and speak at the same wavelength.
