A Story Of Rescues From Flood Water By Rachel Yoshida
When the many floods that have taken place in our country over the past several years were covered by the media, many of us sat at home in safety and watched as others endured the horror of a life time. For those who had adequate warning and were evacuated before the flood destruction hit, they were spared what others had to overcome. Sometimes there was not enough warning when water started coming towards their homes at a steady speed and it left them no time to get to safety.
Some of these people had to go up onto their rooftops with little children and pets in tow only to sit there and wait for rescue. It had to be terrifying to know that the water might continue to rise until there was not even a rooftop to sit on. Others who go out of their homes after the flooding began found themselves having to swim to safety somewhere and clinging to whatever floating debris they could find is what help many survive.
It was heart wrenching to watch as many made their way through waist high water with children or a small bag of belongings on their shoulders not knowing where they were going to end up. Some people took refuge in tree tops while flood water swirled all around them threatening to sweep them away at any moment. This is a situation that no one could comprehend unless they actually had to live through it.
Rescue seemed to take forever to get to some of these trapped people. They would sit on the rooftops and helplessly wave makeshift flags to be sure they were spotted by helicopters flying over head. Eventually most of these folks were rescued and taken somewhere safe, but it did not take away the terror that they experienced. It is certain that they had nightmares for some time to come.
Since so many natural disasters happen without warning, we will probably never have all the rescue maneuvers in place that can save everyone, but we have to acknowledge the great effort that is put forth by so many who risk their own lives to help to save others in jeopardy. There is a kindness in human nature that we forget exists sometimes when we are trying to deal with the day to day world where it can feel like no one cares. Natural disasters as horrible as they are do have a tendency to bring out the best in some people and for this we should all be grateful for in case we are ever put in the position where we have to rely on the kindness of strangers to help us survive.
