The American market is continuing to grow in used book sales. In fact, since last year the sales in used books has increased throughout the United States twelve percent, which does not include sales from used book sold at on-line booksellers.
Consumer experts were surprised to see the market for used books increasing as rapidly as it has. This increase reflects on how easily it has become it has become for businesses to create a substantial inventory and sell used books. Plus, there are many companies and individuals that are using auction sites to sell used books as well. There is no doubt that the selling used books is not a growing fad, because their growth has began being pushed with several on-line auction sites so that the that the number of used books being sold is going to continue to increase.
Several study groups have done surveys to research this growing market and growing trend. The data that was compiled came from large on-line auction sites where used books were brought and sold, and from several independent book store owners throughout the country. The results was that the growth of sales on these used books were helped by the on-line businesses that were having such a great experience with their vendors and customers. These helped them to begin start recommending them to their friends and family.
Some individuals and even the publishing companies have expressed an overwhelming concern that the sales from used books may take over potential sales for new books. However, with the ever rising cost of hard cover new releases costing up to thirty dollars it is no wonder individuals are being turned toward used books that sell for a fraction of the price. Publishers and authors are concerned because when individuals are purchasing used books they do not receive royalties or revenue off them as they do with new books. So in retrospect, purchasing used books actually affects the income of authors and publishers, which is why they see selling used books as a threat.
Authors and publishers are so upset about the increase in sales of used books that they have contacted the Authors Guild, who have been complaining about certain on-line auction sites that will offer a book in used and new copies on the same screen. They feel that the used books are affecting the decision of the individual, which is causing sales in new books to suffer drastically. Avid readers have found that they can purchase many used books for the price of one new book.
Authors and publishers do not seem to understand that the selling of used books also keeps them in circulation, which is an advantage for them. The greatest benefit of all for an individual to purchase an used book is to save money. Plus, many used book stores will allow you to return the used books you have purchased for a store credit, which can be applied to your next purchase. Used books will cost about thirty percent less than a new book with the difference being their condition.
