Buy a Memorial Star By Steven Walters
Buying a star for your girlfriend, a family member or friend is a great gift idea. I know the memorial stars have been around now for quite a few years, but it's still a unique and fun gift. The gift of their own star named after them isn't something that most people would think of and they will be surprised and pleased when you present it to them.
There are sites online that sell stars for under $20 which makes this an affordable gift as well. You don't actually receive the star, but you will get to give it whatever unique name you want. Can you imagine how happy your girlfriend will be when you present her with a star named after her and can actually point to it in the sparkling night sky.
If the person you're giving the star to is interested in science fiction or astronomy it makes the gift even more special for them. For someone who loves the stars and the idea of space travel there's nothing more special than a gift that reflects this interest. Take my word for it; any science fiction fan will be surprised and pleased if you dedicate a star to them.
I know some people hold off from buying a star because they think it's not possible to actually own a star. They are right about this. There is only one group that can name stars and that is the International Astronomical Union (IAU), but they do not sell stars. I know because I looked it up on their website. And no, NASA does not sell stars either, I checked that as well.
I know this will keep some away from buying a star in the sky, but it's still the thought that counts and many people will be quite happy to receive the gift of a star, even if only as a novelty. They will know that you cared enough to put thought into a fun present and something that they can have forever.
You should still want to do your homework before buying a star to dedicate to someone to avoid companies that will overcharge you or that aren't upfront about what you're actually getting. Mostly though the companies selling stars are honest and upfront.
A really cool idea would be to buy multiple stars all in the same area of the sky. One for each member of your family so that no matter where you all go you could look into the night sky and see a memorial to the family grouped together.
