Choosing A Business Or Company Name

Choosing A Business Or Company Name

Choosing a business or company name is a critical step in the corporate branding process. Your name is the first thing that consumers will see, and is the basis of the first impression that they will form.

You probably have several ideas in mind, and this article will provide some tips about how to discover if one of these ideas may be your next company name, and if not, how to find the right one.

When it comes to naming, there are a few rules of thumb to follow. Be careful when choosing a name that is similar to the name of a company already in existence. Differentiations in spelling are common, but you should know that the name could still be considered too similar by the first company and they may exercise their right to lodge an objection.

Otherwise, use common sense and do not choose a name that is offensive to others, or that contains sensitive words or expressions. Of course, for some industries certain words may not be considered offensive, but you should be fully aware of which words these are before you decide to use them in your company name.

These tips apply to choosing a website url to match your company, too. Do a search to make sure that your url has not already been taken, and if it has, it is good to know this in the initial stages before you begin using your new name and url and building traffic to the website.

Ask yourself the following questions, who are my target customers, should my name describe what my business or company does, what are the five most unique things about my business that appeal to customers, and which types of words and phrases would appeal most to the demographic of my customers.

You should also determine whether you want your new name to motivate potential customers or whether it is more important to stand out from the competition. Many people turn to companies that specialize in helping others choose a business or company name, and if your company has decided to do so then they will be able to provide industry specific strategies and recommendations to help put your business on the map.

If you have not, you may want to do a little Internet research to see if investing in the services of a professional corporate branding agency is in the best interests of your company.
