Many asbestos related information is found in historical chronicles which say that this mineral was a favorite of the ancient Greeks, especially for its fire proof, malleability and insulation properties. This mineral has been used extensively in manufacturing in a wide variety of asbestos products, even though they knew that continuous exposure to it could be fatal to humans.
The asbestos cancer was not only observed in those who were directly exposed to this mineral, but also their families. A number of other maladies were identified as the direct outcome from exposure to the mineral.

The onset of the disease is extremely slow, sometimes taking some 40 years to fully develop; however, once the disease starts manifesting itself, it is only a matter of months before the person dies. They never believed, first of all, that the disease, from which they were suffering in their old age (60s and 70s), was actually the result of their lifetime exposure to asbestos products and other materials containing asbestos.
For example, a family who lived under an asbestos roof didn't know that breathing it in every day of their lives, ingesting food containing particles of asbestos and allowing it to settle on their skin and eyes, and inhaling it through the mouth and nose, would put them at high risk to develop asbestos cancer sooner or later.
All those who were somehow or other exposed to any type of material containing asbestos risked developing some diseases, including the fatal mesothelioma or asbestos cancer. The industry was at one time almost overwhelmed by the presence of asbestos products; so much so that it involved a wide cross section of workers, such as carpenters, electricians, painters, bricklayers, mechanics, plasterers, and so on.
These people become the prime targets of this cancer along with their families and friends. According to reliable asbestos related information, it is next to impossible to cure these diseases; therefore the best thing you could do was to avoid being around the substance. Awareness, in this case, became the only weapon, since prevention seems to be the only cure.
In short, you can easily quote any asbestos related information to explain why so many people fell prey to asbestos cancer. They were literally slowly poisoned across decades of exposure to this killer mineral. The most tragic of all is the fact that the families of all these people too were affected and put at high risk without their knowledge.
Since the disease develops without any symptoms, no one could detect it in time. This meant that when the disease was discovered, the asbestos mesothelioma was in its last stages.
