Overview

The Black and Tan Coonhound was bred when the Bloodhound and the Foxhound was crossed with each other in the United States. This breed is very well known for its raccoon hunting abilities. These dogs are also very successful at hunting types of game such as stag, bear, mountain lion and deer. They can adapt to very cold and warm weather conditions. If a Black and Tan Coonhound is shy or anxious, they may be banned from exhibitions. These dogs are talented in hunting, tracking and agility.

Temperament

This breed is very clever, devoted and submissive - they also do very well at solving problems. The Black and Tan Coonhound is enormously vigilant, enthusiastic and dedicated when it comes to work. They have a very sociable, pleasant and friendly nature. This breed will get along well with children that is considerate, and also with other dogs. They are however not recommended for homes with cats or other small pets. The Black and Tan Coonhound will howl a lot, especially when left alone for long periods of time. This breed also tends to be wary of strangers, but in general they are not aggressive.

Care

The Black and Tan Coonhound should be brushed on a weekly basis, as this will reduce hair loss. They should only be bathed and dry shampooed when it is deemed necessary. It is also recommended that their long ears are checked and cleaned to make sure no infections occur. This breed is inclined to drool, and their face should be wiped off on a regular basis.

Training

Coonhounds are fairly difficult to train, but training them is possible if the right methods are used. These dogs love food, and will most likely do anything for a treat. Seeing that they are so loving and sociable, they should receive training otherwise they will become uncontrollable. This breed tends to be distracted quite easily, and any scent will get them of the track. It is important to be very patient when training these dogs. Cruel and unkind training methods will not work for these dogs, as it will only confuse them. These dogs are also recommended for those with previous dog ownership experience.

Health problems

The Coonhound has a few health problems that are related to the bones, joints, nerves, eyes, muscles and the teeth and mouth. Some possible health problems can include hip and elbow dysplasia and also the inversion of the eyelids. Diseases may occur as a result of immune systems, trauma and infections.
