Tips for Playing Action Games Online

The online arcade has managed to preserve the essence of a good action games. These great time wasters are perfect additions to anyone's time surfing the net. They may be a bit simpler than the graphics hogs that run the market today, but they aren't necessarily easier. You may need a bit of help if you're going to finish the game. These tips should work for about every game in the genre, whether they're a 2D side scroller or a 3D extravaganza.
All action games will have some basic types of weapons in them. In general there will be some form of weak ranged weapon with unlimited ammo and some type of melee attack for those quick buggers who get too close. My first tip is that you can't underestimate either of these beginning moves. They are perfect for the times when you have to fight wave after wave of baddies. They will let you save ammo while only losing a little bit of health to the odd extra attack they slip in. Just think about it. Do you really need to use the BFG-9000 on the slow zombies 200 feet away? No. Do you want to? Of course, but you have to resist the ammo and save it for the tougher beasts later on in the game. You can't expect to take out a tank with a pistol (unless you're playing a Metal Slug game...then you can).
The next tip is to run when it's appropriate. This is especially true for side scrolling games. There are some enemies who just aren't worth it. You may lose a chance for points but you'll save time for the later time bonus. Besides, if you stay behind and duke it out with them you risk losing a life for something truly stupid. If the enemy is slow and you don't want to waste the ammo, feel free to run and not look like a scared little girl.
With that in mind I'll throw in a note to keep an eye on your environment. Some games throw in time limits so the above rule is even more in play. You don't want to fight your way through the zombie hordes to run out of time with the finish line in site. You should also find that some games like to slip in environmental dangers to make you waste lives for slow reflexes.
While you're watching the environment you should take the time to really look for upgrades. These are in just about everything. Break blocks and boxes to find tons of goodies and upgrade when you can. The new weapons are better and more ammo is always good. Few arcade games bother to throw in negative pickups, so feel free to grab everything in sight without much worrying. Then just use your superior firepower to blow up more stuff. In particular keep an eye out for a big section of upgrades. Classic game design leaves a whole bunch of goodies packed together outside the boss room. Make sure you take advantage of it.
