Nursing is a very noble profession and also the professionals serving as nurses are greatly trusted upon by the people. Probably, this is the reason that nurses are not only the treatment and health care providers but also the advocates of the patients. A nurse advocate promotes superior quality health care services. They must also have knowledge about issues that influence the delivery of healthcare services. They should ensure that their opinions and suggestions in the health-related matters are considered by he healthcare authorities. The expenses of good health care are increasing constantly. This rise has made healthcare benefits such as prescription drugs and necessary health services unaffordable for many people, especially the senior citizens. Nurses here can act as an advocate and make efforts to reduce this hike in healthcare expenses. You as a nurse can either call or write letters or emails to the officials who have been elected by you. You can also write the letter to a local newspaper to seek support from people over healthcare issues. As you gain support from many people, the government is left with no other option but to address your demands or at least make amendments to reduce the problems in the healthcare industry. As nurses, you must be aware of the kind of care received by your patients. You can also become nurse advocate for your patients as you can make their voices reach the higher authorities. Besides, being a nurse you are also the advocate of your profession. There is a shortage of nurses in America nowadays. This shortage is anticipated to increase even more in the coming years as many nurses in the age group of 45-50 are on the verge of getting retired. Hence, there is a need to motivate younger students to pursue nursing as a career to reduce this shortage and this can be done by nurse advocates. However, with the help of Senate and House of Representatives, two beneficial bills related to nursing industry have been passed. The Nurse Reinvestment Act and the Nurse Employment and Education Development Act aim to improve the recruitments in nursing profession and scholarships for the intelligent students who are interested to pursue a career in nursing. Hence, as a nurse advocate, you must be in contact with your candidate in the government so as to ensure that more such acts are passed both, for quality health care and also to promote nursing as a career. You may also join groups such as Nurses for Healthier Tomorrow which is a league of many nursing organizations. So, there are many roles played by a nurse advocate both, for their own profession and for the improvement of overall services in the medical industry. Hopefully, with nurses serving as advocates, there would be no shortage of people to fill the positions in the nursing profession and staffing would not be a problem at all.
