Water Damage And How Hot Water Heaters Can Cause It

If you have ever had your hot water heater rupture and bust, either in the plumbing pipes, at the valve, or in the construction of the unit itself, then you may have experienced what an inconvenience it can be, not to mention the mess. Hot water heaters are an appliance in our home that we usually do not see everyday or give very much thought to unless it breaks down or causes a flood.
The several things that can cause a hot water heater to create flooding are usually preventable just by implementing an inspection of it and the plumbing attached to it. When the pipe lines that go to it are kept in good repair, it lowers the risk of sudden busting. Inspecting the hot water heater itself for leaks and signs of rusting can help prevent problems as well. These precautions will not prevent the heating element in the unit itself from going out, but they will help prevent a flood in your kitchen, basement, or wherever else your hot water heater resides in your home.
If a hot water heater is installed properly in the first place, flooding will not be an issue if the worst happens. Hot water heaters should always be placed in a large pan that is made specifically to go underneath them. This will help only if it is a small leak that is soon noticed and repaired before the pan overflows. It might not prevent a flood, but it could keep a small leak from doing slow damage to the floor it sits on.
Having a drain installed very near a hot water heater is the best protection from a flood. This way if the tank or plumbing has a sudden gushing rupture, all the water will drain away and prevent it from reaching other areas of the home. This is a precaution to have in place in case this were to happen while you were away from home for the day or even longer.
Tankless hot water heaters are fairly new on the market. They take up much less space than traditional hot water heaters. These newer tanks are not really tanks at all, but more like a filter that heats the cold water as it travels through the unit. They supply endless hot water so you never need to worry about allowing water to heat up after someone else just bathed or ran the dishwasher. Of course, plumbing might still be an issue, but they are said to help reduce your energy bill because they only heat water as it is needed.
