You can either self move and hire a truck, which is okay, it just entails you and your family to do a lot in a short period of time. Typically truck rental places give you about two to three days turn around to make your move. It is very common then for families to just throw things in boxes or what ever they can find so that they don't end up having to pay additional time. It's always a rush to return the truck to the lot. This causes for things to get lost, thrown out by accident or, sad to say, get broken.
Another great option for the self mover is to hire portable storage containers for your move. What makes this way of moving so great is the convenience of moving on your time table. You get to keep the container for a month or longer if you need to. You pack it on your own. When you are done packing the container, the company comes and picks it up and either brings it to your new location or they can put it in one of their storage facilities until you are ready for it.
However you decide to move always get your estimate in writing and signed by you. Make sure you get a binding estimate. This way you don't get scammed in the end by the moving company telling you the move ended up costing more than anticipated. Unfortunately this is a common occurance with smaller moving companies so beware. For your protection as well make sure that it is clearly defines when your belongings are to arrive at your new place and by what specific company.
