At the top of each of the five columns is a letter; starting from the left B-I-N-G-O. Each letter has a corresponding range of numbers; B = 1-15, I = 16-30, N = 31-45, G = 46-60 and O = 61-75. Each column on the Bingo card will have five numbers that fall within the range of its letter. For instance below the "B" there will be five numbers between 1-15 and the "I" column will have numbers ranging from 16-30, etc. One important exception is the centre square under the N column, which almost always has what is called a "free space" beneath it. This is a box without a number which the player can mark off before any numbers are called.
The person running the game, the "caller", randomly draws balls one at a time, calling first the letter and then the number. If the next number drawn were 47 the caller would call "G-47", etc. The caller (or number generator) continues to draw balls and call numbers until someone achieves the desired pre-determined pattern on their card.
There are dozens (if not hundreds) of possible patterns used in 75 ball Bingo. Some of the more common ones are "single lines" which is when the called numbers on a card form a line of five consecutive squares either vertically or horizontally. Sometimes diagonal lines are acceptable as well. Other common patterns are letters of the alphabet. For instance an "X" would be the top and bottom B's, the 2nd and 4th I's, the centre N (usually the free space), the 2nd and 4th G's and the top and bottom O's. When marked off these spaces form the shape of the letter X. Other commonly used letters are L, T, N and Z. Another common pattern which usually garners a big prize is the "coverall." Quite simply the first person to have all the numbers on a single card is the winner.
In addition to the traditional pattern games which are played until a winner is declared, some games will also offer "progressive jackpot" prizes. These are usually prizes that are offered in an initial amount and they continue to grow until someone wins. They generally involve achieving a pre-determined pattern in a set number of called balls.
