American Bulldog - Dog Breeds - Quality Info You Must Know

To begin we take a look at some facts about this breed then move onto a more indepth perspective on the breed.

Breed group: Mastiff

Weight: male: 70-120, female: 60-100 lbs

Height: male: 22-28, female: 20-26 inches

Overview
The American Bulldog was almost extinct after the Second World War, but they were saved by a man with the name of John D. Johnson. At first these dogs were used for the sport of bull baiting, and they also became valued by farmers due to their intelligence. This breed also has very good working abilities, stamina and also possesses a very caring nature. These dogs were also very good hunters, and they used to hunt wild boars, bears and raccoons.

Temperament
This dog is known as a loving family pet that will get along well with children and other pets. The American Bulldog is very determined dog that will not think twice before attacking predators or threats towards its owners. This breed is without fear, confident and very agile. These dogs have very strong protective instincts and should therefore be well socialised from an early age onwards. Some American Bulldogs might be aggressive toward other dogs and also a bit wary of people they do not know. These dogs will thrive when they are in the company of their families.

Care
The American Bulldog has a short coat that is fairly easy to maintain. You brush them often with a firm hair brush it will help to minimise hair loss, and also keep their coats in a good condition. Only bath these dogs when it is really needed with a mild shampoo. The nails of these dogs should also be trimmed once a week, otherwise they will get too long. Make sure that you only trim the top part of the nail. Also check the ears of these dogs to make sure they are free from allergies or infections.

Training
Make sure that you are prepared well when training these dogs, as they will become bored easily. Make sure that you have at least one hour per day available to exercise and train this dog. If you are not able to meet this need, you might want to consider another breed. Training these dogs should commence from a very early age onwards, and these dogs will not perform well if training methods are cruel and heavy handed. The training should be fair and consistent to get the best results. The American Bulldog does not do well with self-control, and will therefore need more time and attention.

Health problems
American Bulldogs are a very healthy and strong breed, but they do have a few health concerns that potential owners should be aware of. The most common concern is hip dysplasia. Some other health problems are also eye problems, ingrown eyelids, elbow dysplasia and skin and allergy problems.
