Overview of personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. By Francisco Segura
Personal injury protection is advisable for most people depending on the everyday driving activities of the person involved. However, it is especially important if there are dependents as well as obligations in terms of loans and mortgages. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio.Unfortunately however, it can be very costly in other ways if the cover is not appropriate or does not cover the intended items. In America personal injury is now a required form of insurance cover in many states although the amount does vary depending where you are in the USA. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. Even if personal injury protection is not obligatory in your state, you may still want to consider purchasing a policy anyway. With a huge four fifths paid out to the insured, it is not surprising the plans are costly especially when it covers all passengers too. But because it is considered a no fault policy it covers the driver and anyone else in the vehicle, even if the driver was to blame, for medical bills, expenses and any lost earnings. As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. It could be that the cost of lost wages and medical bills may be recovered through an existing health insurance policy. If you were to discover this it may only be necessary to take out a minimal cover personal injury policy and possibly not require one at all. Drivers that have more than their fair share of accidents are more likely to require personal injury protection even though it may cost them more. What many drivers do not realize is that although they may be covered by their own health insurance for medical bills, other passengers, unless they are named on the policy, probably will not be. If any of your regular passengers are inadequately covered or not covered at all, you will need personal injury protection in order to keep them covered. Every driver has a responsibility to look after the safety of the passengers they carry in the vehicle. If you live in a state that does not have mandatory personal injury protection you may want to add this into your portfolio. This is one area where age and driving experience can be on the driver's side and insurance policy costs can be lowered. On the other hand, when you are young and just starting out and probably don't have much in the way of health and liability insurance, you will want to protect yourself, your family and your future by carrying as much insurance as you can afford.
