Overview

The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is a sturdy little dog that is also heavier than its German cousin, the German Pinscher. Austrian Pinschers are conventional Austrian farmer's dogs that was originally developed to drive livestock and also to guard the home. Paintings that date as far back as the 1700s show a dog that is almost alike the breed found today. These dogs are very good at catching rats, and also have a tendency to bite. This breed is very rare outside of Austria.

Temperament

This breed was originally developed as a farm dog, and was used to work farms, guard livestock and the homes of their owners. The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher can be a bit high strung, but in general they are very relaxed toward the people they know. These dogs will do best in an environment where they can put their abilities to work. They are very fond of playing, and will always join in any activity. The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher also love sports and are at their happiest when they are in a place where they can use their natural talents. This breed is without fear and very attentive - they will bark at suspicious sounds. Due to this bark, they are not suited for life in the city and will sometimes also not get along well with other dogs. They do tend to bite from time to time as they take up their guarding duties very seriously. This breed requires lots of space and plenty of exercise. If your living environment is not ideal for this breed, be sure to take them for long walks on a daily basis.

Care

These dogs have very little grooming needs, and should only be brushed on an occasional basis to remove excessive and dead hairs. The Austrian Shorthaired Pinschers are also not very heavy shedding dogs, and will work well with those suffering from allergies.

Training

Training for the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher should be done in a caring, fair and also somewhat firm manner. This breed will learn very quickly, and will also perform very well in skill competitions. If they are trained by the right handler, they will also excel in obedience trials.

Health problems

This breed does have a few health issues, but none of them very serious. They can at times have problems with HD, and they also have a heart condition that is hereditary. These dogs will typically live for 12 to 14 years.
