5 Laptops to Ease Your Travel Woes

Whether you're a commuter lugging your laptop to and from the office or a frequent flier who likes to take your tech with you, you know the benefits of a featherweight notebook firsthand. But why settle for a stripped-down system just to save your back a little agony? We've reviewed a number of lightweight laptops that manage to pack in a wide array of useful features to make your travel experience productive, entertaining, and just plain easier while still keeping theweight to a minimum.

The stylish HP 2133 Mini-Note PC may be tiny, but it brings a great feature set to the table. Though it weighs just over 3 pounds, the Mini-Note manages to cram in two USB ports, an ExpressCard slot (handy for devices like a 3G ExpressCard for cellular broadband), an SD slot, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. An on/off switch on the notebook's bezel lets you control both Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g connectivity. HP also offers a number of storage options for the Mini-Note, including 4GB and 64GB solid-state drives as well as 120GB and 160GB spinning ones. It should be noted that SSDs offer a particular benefit for travelers: They're sturdy, so should your laptop take a tumble, your data is far more likely to stay intact.

If you don't mind taking on a little more weight, the Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 is definitely worth a look. This stylish notebook packs three USB ports that offer a really cool innovation—Sleep-and-Charge—meaning you can plug in your USB-powered devices and they'll charge even while the laptop is turned off. Besides keeping you powered up, the U405-S2830 will help you stay organized with its built-in DVD burner featuring LabelFlash technology, which can etch pictures and text onto special DVD/CD media. This is a definite bonus if, say, you're creating materials for client presentations on the fly.

The Fujitsu LifeBook U810 (WWAN) also offers a decent feature set (including SD and CompactFlash memory card readers), but its connectivity options are what really set this convertible tablet apart. The U810 incorporates an AT&T HSDPA modem, along with 802.11g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, giving you three built-in wireless solutions that should keep you covered just about anywhere you travel.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X300 takes connectivity a step further. Though this featherweight ultraportable doesn't come cheap, it manages to incorporate an integrated EV-DO antenna and GPS module, plus it's WiMAX-ready. This ultraportable is one of the first notebooks to include a WiMAX chip, which may or may not pay off with Intel's next-gen wireless network. In addition, the X300 manages to integrate an impressive feature set into its just-over-3-pound package, including a dual-layer DVD burner and three USB ports.

Although the ThinkPad X300 is a good choice if you're looking for impressive battery life, the ASUS U2E-A2B really shines in this department. ASUS thoughtfully included an extra battery, so you have the option to swap out a lighter, low-duty three-cell battery for a heavier 63-Wh unit that will keep this ultraportable in business for upwards of 5 hours. The U2E-A2B also manages to squeeze a dual-layer DVD burner into its 2.7-pound chassis, along with an impressive three USB ports and an HDMI port (besides the usual features we expect to see in a laptop of this size and weight).

So if you're planning to hit the road anytime soon, be sure to pack one of these lightweight wonders. For more on what these impressive ultraportables have to offer, make our in-depth reviews your next destination.
