Picnic Tables Change for the Better

It’s no surprise that things are always changing; but sometimes, the reasons behind the changes can be very interesting, especially when something that has stayed the same forever suddenly undergoes a revolution. For example, it used to be that everyone had luxuriant front lawns, vibrant gardens, and neatly trimmed hedges. In their backyards, they had plants and grass that were equally well-manicured, and, perhaps, recreational items, such as swing sets, volleyball nets, basketball hoops, and swimming pools. However, even if there was no sports equipment, almost everyone had a grill and a picnic table.That was always the standard, and people would spend weekends, evenings, and holidays working to keep their yards and gardens verdant. Then, somewhere toward the end of the 20th century, a movement away from this practice was started by some who were weary of spending all of their free time tending to the greenery. The dissatisfaction of the faction was evident to varying degrees, as some members simply decided to give up on raising blue-ribbon roses, while others completely paved over their lawns.At first, this seemingly outrageous behavior was unacceptable to people who thought that homes sitting on barren, brown terrain could only be eyesores that would decrease the property values of entire neighborhoods. However, they soon found that, because of the ever-growing number of landscaping accessories, which included huge varieties of decorative mulches and stones, “hardscapes” could be as aesthetically pleasing as lush, green lawns, yet required much less maintenance.Suddenly, millions of people joined the trend, which continues to grow; and, although it began for the purpose of gaining more leisure, many now do it to conserve water. Whether they live in drought-stricken areas, or are trying to preserve one of the planet’s most valuable resources, people everywhere are limiting their water usage. At the same time, not all of them are ready to give up their gardens. Fortunately, among the many landscaping options is a wealth of drought-tolerant, or xeric, flowers and plants, which have been used for some time in certain areas, particularly out west, where there has been a chronic water shortage.Xeric gardens can offer quite a few advantages. Besides using very little water, they also cut down on the need for fertilizer and pesticides, which benefits the environment. They also attract a wide range of birds and good insects, such as bees and butterflies, and can be great solutions for hard-to-manage areas, such as steep slopes.
