The Language of Color

Every color that we see speaks to us in some way. We may not realize it, but it’s true. Each color gives off a different feeling, or mood, and that affects us subconsciously.

This is important when it comes to advertising your company, as well. If you use color printing in your ads, you should be using the colors that give off the mood that you are trying to convey to your customers. Using the wrong colors could prove to be disastrous.

Here is a rundown of the most common colors and how they “speak” to us:

Red
Red is an exciting color. It tends to energize those who look at it, and make them feel sexy or hot. It can also be provocative and powerful.

Pink
Pink is usually used as a soft and romantic color; more subtle than red. It is sweet, tender, and happy. However, it can also make one feel fun and wild (especially bright pink).

Orange
Orange can make the viewer feel young and fun loving. It is a loud color that is usually seen as friendly and inviting. It is often associated with fall, which reminds people of harvest – which is a good thing.

Brown
The color of wood, brown is a warm and wholesome color. But it has a more rustic or antique feeling than other warm colors. It is also a very masculine color.

Purple
Purple is the color of royalty and wealth. It has long been associated with rich and powerful people.

Blue
Blue is a very versatile color. Light blues are calming and peaceful, with a calm cool feel (much like water). Dark blues, by contrast, are more vibrant and dramatic.

Yellow
Since it is the color of the sun, yellow is a warm and enlightening color. It gives off a feeling of energy and happiness.

Black
Of all colors, black is the most powerful. It is elegant and bold, mysterious and magical. Plus, it is the color of night, giving it a dark and eerie feeling.

Silver
Silver is usually used to make the viewer feel like he is being transported to the future. Silver is also useful if you are going for a classic feel.

Gold
As you might imagine, gold is a color that feels valuable and prestigious. It is a warm color that gives one a sense that wealth is nearby.

As you can see, colors can be used in a vast variety of ways. The next time you design a color printing project for your business, take these tips to heart. Make sure you are using the colors that will elicit the mood you are going for. Use warm colors if you are going for a happy feeling; cool colors if the mood should be more melancholy.
