Cancer occurs when cell division gets out of control. By Francisco Segura
Many films about cancer have been made in recent years, the most notable features a scientist who discovers the cure in a South American rain forest, only to lose it; huge efforts have been put into research into this terrible disease and now many more people survive than a few years ago. I wonder if you can imagine a time when this disease is no longer a problem or when a visit to the doctor for some routine tests does not bring the fear that it does at the moment? Research over the years has helped our understanding of cancer but not to the point where we are able to foretell exactly when it will happen.Even now many people do not really understand what cancer is despite growing up with it all around them. Could it be true that we are all born with it? This is a disease where unhealthy cells grow, divide and then expand into other cells, often transferring to parts of the body using a method called metastasis. The malignant property of cancer differentiates it from benign tumors which limit their growth and do not invade or metastasize; some benign tumors, however, are capable of becoming malignant. The disease may affect people of all ages and there is an increased risk of suffering from the more common cancers as you get older; thirteen percent of people die from one of it's many strains every year around the world. Most cancers are caused by some form of poison in the cells which creates abnormalities in the genetic makeup of those cells; cigarette smoke is a predisposing factor to a number of cancers.Just to confuse the issue more, it is possible inherit genes that may be pre-disposed to it as well as faulty genetic DNA replication. It would seem some people are more susceptible to it than others and it may be their genetic makeup and their exposure to certain carcinogens that is responsible.Research into the cause of cancer continues around the globe and is the disease most frequently studied on a regular basis. More knowledge is being acquired about cancer each year. Study, in general, helps us learn why one person is more susceptible to an illness than another. Ultimately, even if they don't find the cure for some time, this research may be able to tell us how to avoid contracting cancer in the first place. One of the major causes surrounds food and dietary habits; your regular diet could be putting you at long term risk from all kinds of diseases. There are certain foods that are considered risky such as excess salt in the diet, too much saturated fat and overindulgence in dairy foods; in particular, excess calcium is believed to have a direct effect on the incidence of prostrate cancer amongst men around the world.Cancer can affect any part of the body from the bones, blood, skin or organs; nowhere is safe from it. Sometimes the disease is only picked up through routine screening. Usually the cancer is at an early stage and a person may have a better chance of being cured. the number of different types of cancer that can be treated has increased dramatically in recent years with so much intensive research being carried out. For those people diagnosed with cancer, my heart goes out to them and their families; however, the constant research is paying off and the life expectancy of cancer victims is increasing all the time.
