What You Need To Know Before Getting Breast Implants By Jim Warren
When you are considering breast augmentation for cosmetic purposes you should find out all the information you can about the risks and complications that can be associated with breast implants.
There are a couple of different types of implants that are on the market. They can be made of silicone or saline. Both of these implants have silicone on the outer cover but the inside is different for each one. Saline is filled with saltwater and silicone gel implants have silicone on the inside. There are a couple of companies that are approved by the FDA to create these implants. They are Mentor and Allergan.
The silicone gel implants were first created in 1962, but didn’t gain real popularity until the 80’s. During that time silicone gel was the material of choice for breast implants. The silicone implants were banned in 1992 because there began to be problems with the implants in many women. The implants were found to rupture and when that happened conditions like Lupus was the result. The ban was reversed many years later when it was discovered that there was no real connection between the conditions and the breast implants.
When an implant ruptures in the body, with saline you will just have harmless saltwater in the body that will cause no harmful side effects. However the breast will lose its shape. When a silicone implant ruptures you will not notice the problem. You can only tell that a silicone gel implant has ruptured with an MRI. There have been no connections made between the rupture of a silicone gel implant and any problems in the body as a result of leaking silicone.
Silicone implants contain platinum and may cause a problem for the body, even though studies have not shown this to be true.
The saline implants are easier to implant as well. They are filled after they are implanted and can be made larger with an injection of more saline instead of a new surgery. They can also be made smaller in the same manner.
There are pros and cons to both kinds of implants. Silicone gel implants have a better look and feel, but you might not like the risks associated with them. You should look at the pros and cons carefully before you make any decision.
