Natural Disasters And Home Water Damage By Rachel Yoshida
It seems like almost every time we turn on the television or get on the computer we hear more stories about a natural disaster of one kind or another. They are happening all over the world with what appears to be increased intensity. It is hard to tell whether there are actually more disasters taking place or if it is because the news coverage is extensive and constant all the time. Either way here in our country we have definitely been getting more than our fair share of floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes in recent years.
Most recently it has been the Mid West that has been suffering from flooding because of too much rain and then rising rivers and streams. In these low lying farmland areas, it has taken a devastating toll on farmers and homeowners alike. Entire fields of crops have been under water with no chance of salvaging them. We all know that this will mean higher prices at the grocery store and for products made using corn, those items will be more expensive too.
While the damage to crops is bad enough for the economy, the damage that flooding does to homeowners and renters alike it just as devastating. People have had to flee there homes quickly in many cases due to flash flooding that they do not always see coming. This is the worst because it does not give them time to remove many of their belongings and this makes the overall losses even worse for them.
When rivers and streams flood, they usually do occur quickly and within days or a week or two the water is gone and nothing is left but sludge and mud everywhere. Even if a home is only flooded with six inches of water, it leaves a lot of home destruction that can cost thousands of dollars to repair. For many whose homes are flooded throughout with several feet or more of water, the home can be a total loss. The only way people can really deal well with a situation like this is if they are adequately insured.
When you make sure your home insurance covers flooding from Mother Nature, you can have the damage repaired by professionals or even rebuild if necessary. Those who are caught without flood insurance can have few options when it comes to water damage repairs. Mold is one of the biggest problems because it can begin to grow fairly quickly and require extensive clean up. Then there are the other damages such as woodwork, furniture, electronics, personal items, and so much more. If you think you are even close to an area that has a small chance of flooding, get flood insurance. You might find that if a flood comes, it will mean the difference in being able to save your home or not.
