Why we should think about PIP: Because Accidents on the road are a fact of life. By Francisco Segura
Accidents on the road are a fact of life, not matter how good a driver you are so isn't it a good idea to look after yourself with a personal injury protection plan? There is more to this subject than just a person's belief that it will not happen to them, especially when they have other people to think about if the worst should happen. These insurance plans are all worthwhile but the average American family cannot always justify the additional strain on their monthly budget. Unfortunately, this can be an expensive insurance policy to have and many families cannot justify the monthly expense when it is usually they who are most at risk. This needs to be looked at carefully to ensure it meets the family needs before it is taken out. Not every state has made this law yet but a few have although the amount of protection does vary considerably. The figures for this show massive variations with people living in Florida on requiring one tenth the amount that citizens in Alaska do. If you live in a state where personal injury protection has not been made law yet, that does not mean you should wait until it is!A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. As a no fault policy though, the plan pays for loss of earnings, medical expenses and various other costs for the policy holder and his passengers even if the insured was responsible for the situation. Some plans will cover some if not all these aspects and it is worth checking these fully before any additional insurance plans are started. It is quite common for certain aspects like hospital bills and possibly a percentage of lost income to be covered by a family health insurance policy. If you were to discover this it may only be necessary to take out a minimal cover personal injury policy and possibly not require one at all. There are some other factors to consider though as to whether you actually need personal injury protection; one being your current driving record. Health insurance plans will often cover the main policy holder as the driver and providing the passengers are relatives, it will usually cover them as well if they are injured. You will need to check these details and not hope for the best because if the personal injury protection does not extend to them adequately, there could be problems. It is not unfair to assume that any person traveling in your vehicle should be the responsibility of the driver and insured individual. Just because your state does not make it compulsory to have a personal injury protection plan in force, does not mean you should neglect your civic responsibilities towards others. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need minimal injury insurance. Accidents unfortunately happen but before you rush into buying insurance cover, look into the subject as it could save you some money but more importantly will make you feel more secure when you drive with passengers.
