They Key to Pleasant Travel with Kids By Mel Bryson
If you are a new parent, you might not be sure of how to prepare for a trip with your children. Or perhaps you are quite the experienced parent who finds travel with kids to be far more onerous than desirable. If the latter is the case- here's some good news: if you prepare yourself with the right options, you might just be able to get away on a vacation that's actually stress free! If nothing else, you can certainly take the edge off of travel time with the following tips for traveling with children.
The first thing you want to have covered is how you are going to keep your children entertained. Their patience for counting cows out the car window probably won't get you more than a few miles and airline travel can be hectic enough without trying to keep your children amused at the same time. Here's a really great trick: keep a number of surprise items with you at all times. These should be fun little toys or books that are new to your children-- novelty is an important part of how this works. Then, once they've grown bored with whatever they were doing (or whatever you handed them previously) you simply whip out a new item and present it to them. Depending on the item and your child's attention span, this can probably buy you a good bit of time. Travel with kids is vastly improved when they have something to occupy their time.
Once you arrive at your destination, you want to be ready to rock and roll. If you look at the travel strollers being sold these days, you would probably be amazed at how light and easily folded they are. Many of them will even fit into the overhead bins on a plane. Even if your tot wants to stroll along beside you, you'll probably find that they'll get tired long before you reach your destination and you can use the stroller to carry other items until that time comes. Many parents also carry a folding travel high chair with them. It's better to be prepared- you never know when you'll be at a restaurant or a relative's home who doesn't have a highchair. Doing without usually complicates your own eating time far more than is desirable.
Always take medicine. Even if it's just a short trip and your kids are as healthy as green beans and kale, it's important to be prepared. Travel can upset the body, and even if it's just a stomach ache, you want to be able to keep your kids healthy and happy for the duration of your trip. While you're at the packing- take a good look at what all you've packed. Most people over-pack and end up hauling around way too much stuff. With the rising cost of travel, packing light will definitely work in your favor, both in terms of the weight of the baggage and reducing everything you're responsible for keeping track of in an airport.
