The Importance of Communicating with Customers By charen smith
You might think that the title of this article is a given; that it should go without saying. But you would be wrong.
Far too many small business owners get so wrapped up in the day to day operations of their company, and in paying the ever growing mountain of bills, that they forget about their most valuable asset: their customers. Small business owners must stay in constant contact with their customers, and they must always elicit feedback from them. Personal contact is usually the only thing that sets a small business apart from a large corporation.
Here are a few ways to stay in contact with your indispensable customers:
1. Catalogs If you have a big enough budget (and it doesn’t have to be huge) you should invest in a catalog printing. In addition to sharing your products with your customers, it is a form of communication as well. It reminds your customers that you are there and that you are trying to get their business. That can go a long way in making the sale. Plus, you can include feedback forms within your catalog in order to hear from your readers. One caveat, however: when you get your catalog printing done, make sure you use a high quality catalog printing company. It will be worth it.
2. Newsletters Newsletters may be old fashioned, but they work. It doesn’t matter if they are in paper form or if you send them via email. All that matters is that every month (or every week, or every quarter) you send a newsletter to your past customers and any prospects that you have identified. This will keep them up to date on what is going on with your business, and (like catalogs) remind them that you still exist. Try to continually build up your mailing list by asking customers for references.
3. Booklets Much like catalogs, a booklet printing can be very effective for your business. Booklets have the added benefit of flexibility. You can include a stack of them within your store, and you can ask to place some in other stores as well. The more you get out there, the more they will be read, and the more potential sales you can make. I must make the same note I made about catalogs, however. Make sure you invest in a good quality booklet printing. This is not an area where you should skimp on cost. A poorly designed or printed booklet is painfully obvious, and will do you more harm than good.
4. Email Regular emails to your customers are also quite effective, if done properly. Be careful not to engage in spam, by sending massive chain letters to thousands of people, because then you will be ignored. Send personalized emails to specially chosen customers, and communicate with them that way.
