Why You Need An Acting Mentor

By Bart Icles

Why You Need An Acting Mentor

Are you one of them many people who have decided that they want to be an actor? When you decided this, did you realize how hard it is for someone to get into that field of work? It is extremely hard, especially for the average person. When trying to get into the acting industry you run into two main problems. One, you need good acting jobs in order to get to know the right people in the industry. Two, you need to know the right people to get the good jobs. It is pretty much a lose-lose situation if you are trying to travel the road all by yourself. But, if you can find a mentor to teach and coach you, you will develop an edge that few other actors or actresses have. There are a few advantages of having a mentor over not having a mentor, I will discuss them below.

First, the price of tuition for a mentor is much more affordable than the price it costs to pay tuition for a full 4 year program. A good mentor will get you real life experience and hands on training that you don't get by sitting in a classroom. You can expect to pay around $6,500 to $10,000 for a good mentor program, which is a fraction of what you would pay for a full 4 year program.

Second, your education comes to you, not you to them. If you enroll in a 4 year program at a college or university, you really have no say of where you will be attending classes. You will just go where you are accepted. If you get a mentor to teach you, you can usually find one that is nearby. Most times, they will even come to your choice of location to make things easier on you.

Third, you will get connected! When you work with a seasoned mentor, you will not only have the benefit of personal, hands on experience, but you will inherit their professional network. In any form of business, a personal and professional network will help you take your game to the next level. It has been said many time that in show business, everything you do and become falls on who you know, not what you know. If you mentor has been around the block, they can help you connect with people you probably wouldn't have ever had the opportunity to work with.

If you haven't considered an acting mentor before, you just might be surprised just how far they can help you go in the industry.
